The objective of the study was to evaluate the place of the LASER treatment versus sclerotherapy for telangiectasia and reticular veins, having in mind to solve the problem with a good aesthetic result.
Since 1994 we utilized sclerotherapy with liquid (initially) or foam (in the last years) for treating reticular veins and telangiectasia. Since 2001 we began to use different types of lasers for the treatment of reticular veins and telangiectasia- Argon laser, Diode laser 810 nm and 980 nm-with or without cooling, Nd-Yag and IPL, as single treatments or associated with sclerotherapy .We analyzed retrospectively a group of 3620 patients which had at least one treatment for reticular veins or telangiectasia and we tried to contact them for a phone selfevaluation or to meet them in the consultation room for a free reevaluation .We had finnaly 3 subgroups, one of 2134 patients with only sclerotherapy, one of 1037 patients with only lasertherapy and the smallest group of 449 with both, sclerotherapy and lasertherapy.
We obtained statistically significant better results, aesthetic and functional, for reticular veins and telangiectasia with only sclerotherapy than lasertherapy; sclerotherapy was more effective than the vascular laser in the majority of the cases, being also a less expensive treatment. The surprise was that better than sclerotherapy alone were the results in the group with associated treatment- sclerotherapy and after a while-laser.
In conclusion we are recommending sclerotherapy as the first option of treatment for reticular veins and telangiectasia but with the possibility of obtaining better results when associating the vascular lasers .
